Groningen – Ajax never kicked off last Sunday due to fires erupting in the stands after a massive amount of paper was thrown onto the playing field and started burning. 28 people were injured and Groningen escaped a possible major disaster (what if the fires had spread a little more quickly…you don’t want to think about that). Because it is nearly the end of the season, with one round left to play, this game has to be dealt with quickly and will now be played on Wednesday, in Groningen, with fans allowed at the stadium.
PSV spilled some points when they could have grabbed the Dutch Eredivisie title in a draw at home against Twente last Sunday. This means Ajax still has a shot at the title in the last round of games to be played, but only íf they get a win here against Groningen. Apart from this great do-or-die motivator, Ajax has been in good form lately, with Huntelaar scoring goals like there’s no tomorrow. I also think they will be irritated and edgy and really out to get Groningen because of what happened Sunday, their postponed chance to get closer to PSV right then and there and the intense atmosphere of Ajax-hate that was everywhere surrounding the game, Ajax players, staff and board that day until the fires started.
This passionate home crowd atmosphere will not be there, at least not with such force, this time around. Groningen is in a kind of shock after what happened, and what could have happened, and I think everybody (the club, the players, most of the fans) in their mind will not be focused a 100% on football for this game, especially so quickly after it all happened. Groningen is gutted about this, the fans are somewhat divided and angry (a good portion of them could not even show up at all) and I think there will be an awkward, suppressed feeling in the stadium. FCG hasn’t got much to play for except the honour and preparation for the UEFA-cup play-offs, having already secured a 7th place in the final league table. On top of all this Groningen has not been in the best of forms lately, to put it mildly. Last nail in the coffin could be the clear difference in quality between the two sides, also noting that Ajax (of all clubs) bought three of Groningen’s best players during the last year, weakening their opponent’s strength considerably and building their own.
I really fear Ajax will take Groningen apart in this game. This is one double-sided prediction where as a supporter I really hope to be proven wrong, while at the same time as a bettor I am almost certain that I won’t be. I think picking a game with 10/10 stakes should be the exception, but in my opinion this game qualifies.
